Escape Chalet takes up to two dogs and they stay free when you book direct. Every stay includes the Pup Package: elevated ceramic bowls, an orthopedic bed, treats, toys, dog blankets and towels, a grooming kit, a fenced back deck, and a trail and cafe map. Steamboat has five city-designated off-leash areas, and three of the valley's best trails allow dogs.

Forty acres on Anglers Drive, five minutes from the chalet, off-leash under voice and sight control. Leash on the approach trail and in the lot, and pack the waste out.

Mad Creek and the barn.

Mad Creek

A hike-and-bike trail marked dog-friendly in our guide, running along the creek with canyon scenery. The barn at 3 miles round trip is the turnaround.

The Devil's Causeway

An hour's drive, marked dog-friendly and strenuous. Turn around at the land bridge; do not take a dog across it.

Spring Creek Park at the Lower Pond, or the Butcherknife and Sailors Way trails. All off-leash, all minutes away.

Take turns

Dogs are not allowed in the hot tub, so this is a take-turns evening. The fenced deck is the dog's answer.

The rules, everywhere.

Off-leash areas run from about an hour after sunrise to an hour before sunset, dogs must be leashed on approach trails and in parking lots, and you pack the waste out. Pet Kare Clinic on Anglers Drive is six minutes away and has a doctor on call 24 hours.

Your base for all of it.

Escape Chalet sits in the mountain district at the base of Mount Werner, a flat ten-minute walk from the gondola, with the free Green Line bus stopping 50 feet from the door.
