Chasing the gold.

The aspens around Steamboat Springs usually turn between the middle of September and the first week of October, with the higher passes going first. Rabbit Ears Pass, Buffalo Pass, and the Elk River valley north toward Clark and Hahn's Peak are the three drives worth building a trip around, and all three start within 20 minutes of the chalet.

The wide-open meadow views are as good as the aspen stands themselves, and there are pullouts most of the way up, so nobody has to choose between driving and looking.

Fish Creek Falls

Minutes from downtown and open year round. The main falls are a half-mile round trip on a path everyone can manage.

Day Two

North to Steamboat Lake.

Elk River Road, toward Clark

CR 129 north through ranchland, pine forest, and hillsides of colour, past Clark and on toward Hahn's Peak. The classic Routt County autumn drive.

About 30 minutes north, snow-fed and ringed with aspen. Rent a pontoon if the weather is still generous, or just eat lunch by the water.

Mad Creek on the way home

A well-kept out-and-back along the creek. Go all the way to the historic barn: 3 miles round trip and worth every one of them.
